KEY ADDRESSABLE MARKETS
Today about on third of all food that is produced is wasted. In Norway alone this is about 385,000 tonnes per year, or 43 kilos per person. Insects such as Black Soldier Fly (BSF) and Mealworm larvae can transform this waste to high-value protein, and in to feed or food.
A single gram of eggs turn into 2,4 kilos of protein in 18 days. This allows for recirculation of the valuable food resources which would otherwise be wasted.
BSF larvae is processed to become four different feed ingredients.
1. Protein meal contains around 50% of protein.
Mealworm larvae can be used directly as food.
Half of the planet's land area is now used for agriculture. Further land use will come at the expense of carbon storage capacity and biodiversity, which can destabilize the climate, according to the UN Climate Commission.
Today, only 2% of food comes from the sea, but the production of species low in the marine food chain has a significant potential to become sustainable food or feed for humans and animals. Strengthening the production of such low-trophic aquaculture is one of five recommendations of the EU Commission's report on food from the oceans in 2017.
Feed raw materials, which are not currently used as feed, may represent an opportunity to increase food security, reduce the need for imported raw materials and have significantly reduced impact on climate and environmental footprints of animal food production.
Tunicatemeal is a novel marine feed ingredient cultivated in coastal waters. The production does not require any land-area, feed, freshwater or chemicals. Tunicates can replace overfished raw material sources with highly sustainable marine tunicates in feed.
